Ai Ogura melanjutkan performa impresifnya dari Grand Prix Styria dengan memimpin sesi latihan bebas pertama Moto2 Austria, balapan kedua double-header Red Bull Ring.

Pembalap Jepang yang membela Honda Team Asia itu mencatatkan laptime 1 menit 28,887 detik, unggul hanya 0,007 detik dari Augusto Fernandez. Marcel Schrotter, Marco Bezzecchi, dan Lorenzo Dalla Porta melengkapi lima besar.

Dan sama seperti putaran Spielberg akhir pekan lalu, duet Red Bull KTM Ajo memulai akhir pekan dengan lambat. Raul Fernandez menempati posisi kedelapan, sementara itu pimpinan klasemen Remy Gardner mengakhiri FP1 di posisi ke-11.
