2024 F1 Dutch Grand Prix - Friday Practice as it happened

Relive all the action from Friday practice at Zandvoort as F1 returns from the summer break.

Max Verstappen returns to Zandvoort for his home race, the F1 Dutch Grand Prix.

The Red Bull driver is unusually winless in the past four grands prix.

To keep McLaren's Lando Norris at an arm's length, Verstappen will want to return to form in the Netherlands - at a circuit he is unbeaten at since its return to the F1 calendar in 2021.

Wrapping up Friday

That brings our coverage of Friday practice to an end.

It proved to be an interesting day, with both McLaren and Mercedes taking it in turns to set the pace throughout FP1 and FP2.

Max Verstappen, who is unbeaten at Zandvoort since its return to the F1 calendar in 2021, ended the day nearly three-tenths off the pace.

Join us at 1000 tomorrow morning as we build up to final practice and resume our live coverage of the Dutch Grand Prix.

Full FP2 results

Here are the full results from both practice sessions at Zandvoort on Friday.

That's it for FP2

The chequered flag is waved, signalling the end of FP2 and Friday's track action.

Russell sets the pace for Mercedes, a fraction clear of Piastri's McLaren and teammate Hamilton.

Long run time

After a flurry of push laps using the soft tyres, the field's attention has now switched to long runs to gather crucial data for Sunday's grand prix.

Sainz's day is done
15:30
Russell heads times

Russell now goes P1 on the soft tyre with a 1m10.702s. That puts him 0.061s clear of Piastri's McLaren.

Mercedes teammate Hamilton sets a purple first sector, but loses time over the rest of the lap and ends up third, 0.111s down on Russell.

15:27
Bad news for Sainz

Ferrari have confirmed that Sainz will take no further part in FP2 due to a gearbox problem.

That is a blow for the Spaniard. He's going to miss a good half an hour or so of dry running.

15:26
Norris pips Verstappen

The soft tyre runs are underway and it is Norris who sets the initial benchmark.

He takes top spot away from Verstappen by just 0.025s with a 1m10.961s.

Perez goes third, some six-tenths off the pace.

Next up come the Williams pair of Albon and Sargeant.

15:23
Back to green

That was a short red flag.

Hulkenberg's car has been cleared away and the drivers are heading back out for the final 36 minutes of FP2.

15:17
Red flag!

Hulkenberg has crashed at Turn 1 and the first red flag of the weekend is out!

The German is fine but his Haas car is stuck in the gravel up against the barriers.

Several drivers have been caught out at the first corner in the windy conditions today but Hulkenberg is the first to hit the barriers.

15:17
Hamilton topples Verstappen

Hamilton has just gone fastest on the medium tyres with a lap that is 0.298s quicker than Verstappen's previous benchmark.

Mercedes teammate Russell, meanwhile, has also improved. He goes third, nearly half a second adrift of Hamilton.

15:12
Russell has 'strange' lock up

Russell just had a big lockup heading into Turn 9 and ran wide into the gravel trap.

"Little bit strange," Russell reported over team radio following that moment.

Fast start to FP2

In complete contrast to FP1, it has been a busy start to proceedings this afternoon. Not surprising given the much better conditions out there on track.

Verstappen has set the early benchmark ahead of Norris, Hamilton and Red Bull teammate Perez. Everyone is out on track and setting initial push laps.

15:00
Second practice is underway

For now, attention turns back to the track, as second practice begins at Zandvoort.

Could Haas miss Italian GP?

An intriguing story is developing in the F1 paddock today.

It has emerged that Uralkali - Haas’ Russian title sponsor in 2021 - has made a bid to courts in the Netherlands to seize the American team’s assets over an outstanding payment. It’s reported that the fee owed is in the region of $9 million.

Haas say they are working hard to resolve the situation which could, in theory, impact their participation in next weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

Can McLaren keep up pace?

In a wet-dry opening practice it was Lando Norris who set the pace in his upgraded McLaren.

Norris headed Red Bull's Max Verstappen in FP1, ending up 0.201s faster than the world championship leader, with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton third.

The weather has improved heading into this afternoon's session. It is still windy but the grey clouds and rain have been replaced by blue skies and sunshine.

Chequered flag - Norris tops FP1

The chequered flag is out and that concludes opening practice at Zandvoort.

Norris sets the pace ahead of championship leader Verstappen, with Hamilton ending up third thanks to a late improvement in his Mercedes.

12:29
Norris heads Mercedes

Lando Norris finds more time in his upgraded McLaren with a 1m12.818s.

Norris is three-tenths faster than the Mercedes pair of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.

12:25
Norris fastest on soft tyres

Lando Norris goes fastest on softs with a 1m14.519s to move a second clear of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.

Oscar Piastri and George Russell have also taken turns topping the timesheets in the past five minutes or so.

Times are tumbling on the soft tyres and the order is changing all the time as the track continues to dry and improve.
