Morgan takes delight from last-gasp podium run
Adam Morgan said his last-gasp manoeuvre to seize the final step on podium during the third Donington Park British Touring Car Championship was something 'that couldn't be planned'.
The Ciceley Motorsport driver took advantage of Dave Newsham and Ashley Sutton's arduous battle for third position by undercutting the pair on the exit of Coppice during the final lap of the race.
Morgan's Mercedes A-Class machine got a far superior exit from a wet Coppice corner which gave the Mac Tools backed driver the high ground heading into the final chicane.
"We already had eighth and eleventh. It was an OK weekend so far as we wanted top-ten finishes. To get back on the podium with P3 and another Independents' win is fantastic," said Morgan.
"It was just one of those moments where it sort of appeared in front of you. You can't plan these things. You've got to jump at every opportunity you get. I saw the gap and put my nose down there, with a bit of a squeeze on the grass.
"I was thinking it was going to be a drag race to the chicane but luckily the car was handling pretty well and I was able jump on the brakes pretty hard and get it stopped and turned in."
Morgan was later promoted up to second following Gordon Shedden's post-race exclusion and has moved to third in the BTCC drivers' standings as a result.
Speaking before learning of Shedden's exclusion, Morgan said: "Obviously that will be really nice for us to move up another position, more points in the bag. It would be a shame for Gordon [Shedden] but every opportunity counts. If we take more points, we take more points."
