Goff claims first BTCC pole of 2018

WIX Racing's Jack Goff has successfully replicated his practice form to secure pole position ahead of tomorrow's opening British Touring Car Championship race at Brands Hatch.

The Honda Civic Type-R driver emerged from the opening qualifying quickest of all ahead of Motorbase Performance's Sam Tordoff and Team BMW's Colin Turkington after producing a 48.038 second lap around the Brands Hatch Indy layout.

Although Goff took pole by a relatively secure margin ahead of the Ford Focus RS of Tordoff, it was BTCC debutant Dan Cammish who arguably stole the show during his first qualifying in the series.

Following the opening set of runs, Cammish looked odds on to secure what would have been a remarkable debut pole position after the factory Honda driver blitzed the field by setting what at the time was a new qualifying lap record with a 47.946 second lap.

However, the 28-year old committed a pit-lane infringement by going through a red light, which meant he lost his best times set prior to the infringement.

Cammish did manage to recover to fourth but was unable to recapture the ultimate pace he produced earlier in the session.

BMW Pirtek Racing's Andrew Jordan split the two factory Hondas ahead of the sixth placed Matt Neal in fifth position, while Tom Chilton ensured two Motorbase Fords made the top-ten grid order in seventh.

Matt Simpson backed up his eye-catching practice by qualifying his Eurotech prepared Honda Civic Type-R in eighth ahead of Speedworks Motorsport's Tom Ingram in ninth and Brett Smith in tenth.

Elsewhere, it was a difficult afternoon for the Subaru outfit with reigning champion Ashley Sutton qualifying in 18th while Jason Plato could fare no better than a dismal 29th.
