Cammish beats Ingram to Thruxton pole

Honda's Dan Cammish will start Sunday's opening race from pole position after narrowly defeating Toyota's Tom Ingram in a record-breaking British Touring Car Championship qualifying session at Thruxton.

Cammish had already dominated the practice running prior to the 30-minute shootout, but the Halfords Yuasa Racing driver was made to work for his first pole position of 2020 after being pushed all the way.

Although Cammish arrived into qualifying as the clear favourite, the 2019 BTCC runner-up found himself on the back foot after making an error and falling off the track on his first timed effort.

However, the 31-year old recovered in magnificent fashion to produce the fastest ever BTCC lap around the Hampshire circuit with a 1'15.201s to pip Ingram by 0.092s.

Ingram staked his claim for pole position with a sensationally committed effort, which saw the Toyota Corolla briefly take to the grass on the exit of Church corner.

Despite that small error, the Toyota Gazoo Racing UK driver still held onto a front-row result ahead of three-time champion Matt Neal in third.

Neal was another to briefly hold provisional pole after the series legend pieced together a strong effort midway through the session.

The Halfords Yuasa Racing runner is joined on the second row by Adam Morgan. Morgan made a late charge up the order to claim the fourth fastest time ahead of MB Motorsport's Jake Hill in fifth.

Having started the last two opening races from pole position, Motorbase Performance's Rory Butcher had to settle for sixth ahead of BTC Racing's Tom Chilton in seventh.

Championship leader Colin Turkington qualified as the top BMW runner with maximum ballast in eighth ahead of a fine effort from Michael Crees in ninth.

Cruically, Turkington managed to out-qualify his main title rival Ash Sutton, who could only manage the 11th fastest time aboard his Laser Tools Racing Infiniti.

Josh Cook rounds out the top-ten grid order in tenth.
