Cammish smashes Silverstone BTCC lap record for second pole in a row
Honda's Dan Cammish secured his second British Touring Car Championship pole position in a row after smashing Jason Plato's existing lap record in qualifying at Silverstone.
The Team Dynamics driver had already dipped beneath Plato's 57.430s lap record during the earlier FP2 session before going even faster during the 30-minute qualifying shootout.
With the threat of rain lingering in the air for much of the session, the vast majority of the fastest times were set during the final minutes of the shootout, with the exception of Cammish setting his quickest lap with 10-minutes to go.
Cammish jumped to the top of the timesheets before the halfway point of the session and gradually extended his margin over the rest of the field, despite the threat of rain.
The Honda Civic Type-R driver eventually took pole with a 57.349s lap, 0.198s faster than anyone else with the biggest pole position margin of the season so far.
Toyota Gazoo Racing's Tom Ingram joins Cammish on the front row in second after posting a last-gasp effort at the expense of Motorbase Performance's Rory Butcher.
Butcher looked set to start race one from second position, but lost out to Ingram's final flyer by just 0.003s. Incredibly, just 0.010s covered second to fifth with defending four-time champion Colin Turkington leading his Team BMW team mate Tom Oliphant in fourth and fifth.
Crucially Turkington goes into Sunday's opening four positions ahead of championship leader Ash Sutton, who qualified in eighth behind Honda's Matt Neal and the Mercedes A Class of Adam Morgan.
BTC Racing's Tom Chilton and MB Motorsport's Jake Hill complete the race one top-ten grid order in ninth and tenth.
