Sutton wins race two, Cammish takes BTCC lead

Subaru's Ashley Sutton has won a dramatic second race of the day at Brands Hatch, as Honda driver Dan Cammish seizes the British Touring Car Championship points lead for the first time this season following yet more misfortune for Team BMW's Colin Turkington.

With the conditions proving to be just as challenging as the opening race, Sutton excelled in the greasy but drying conditions to comfortably take his first win of the season.

Sutton started the race from eleventh on the grid, but the 2017 champion found himself in the lead as early as lap 7 after carving his way through the pack with ease.

The BMR Subaru driver eventually sailed across the line 5.2s ahead of BMW's Andrew Jordan, but that only told half the story of what proved to be yet another controversial chapter in the title race.

Turkington carried an 8-point lead into the second race, however, the Team BMW driver's title hopes took what could prove to be a terminal dent after the defending champion suffered a spin on the opening lap following contact with Cammish's Honda team mate Matt Neal.

The BMW driver started the race from fifth but immediately jumped up to second, between both factory Hondas with Cammish leading from pole position.

But just corners later, Neal made contact with the rear left of Turkington, which sent his BMW into spin and down to the rear of the field.

Turkington managed to recover and opted to pit for the slick tyre during the early safety car phase. But it was a move that proved futile with the track conditions never drying enough for the reigning champion to make sufficient ground.

As a result, Cammish goes into the final race of the season with an 8-point lead ahead Turkington, while BMW Pirtek Racing's Jordan moves to within 13-points of the title summit.

Jordan finished ahead of Cammish on the podium with the pair claiming second and third.

Cammish's spot on the podium did look to be under threat from a charging Jason Plato, but the two-time champion went off the road at Hawthorn corner on the final lap when chasing the championship leader.

Plato fell down to seventh behind Matt Neal and Motorbase Performance duo Tom Chilton and Ollie Jackson, who all finished in fourth, fifth and sixth.
