Turkington eases to race two victory

Defending British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington secured his first victory of the 2020 season after easing to the race two honours at Donington Park.

The Team BMW driver started race from second on the grid alongside race one winner Dan Cammish, but Turkington immediately powered ahead of the Honda off the line into what proved to be an unassailable winning position.

With the top-ten running ballast for the first time this season, Turkington's BMW 330i M Sport looked in strong form, despite running 54 kilos of ballast.

Prior to the safety car coming out on lap ten, which was needed to recover Nicolas Hamilton's stricken VW CC, Turkington had assembled a three-second lead over Rory Butcher in second, while, in contrast, race one winner Cammish struggled with the 60 kilos of success ballast and slipped down the order to fifth.

Although the safety car slashed Turkington's three-second lead, the reigning champion unsurprisingly kept his measure ahead of Butcher to eventually cross the line over two-seconds ahead of the Motorbase Performance Ford in second.

In fact, such was the pace of the BMW during the second race, Tom Oliphant almost made it a Team BMW 1-2 result, but Oliphant was forced to settle for third, just 0.5s behind Butcher's Focus.

Toyota Gazoo Racing UK's Tom Ingram had held third for much of the race, but eventually fell behind Oliphant during the latter stages to finish fourth. Fourth almost became fifth for the Toyota Corolla driver after a superb charge up the order from Ashley Sutton almost saw the 2017 champion snatch fourth at the death.

Sutton's Infiniti Q50 was once again comfortably the fastest car in the field, which allowed the Laser Tools Racing to scythe his way from 14th to fifth.

Cammish eventually led home his Halfords Yuasa Racing team mate Matt Neal in sixth and seventh, while Adam Morgan finished a strong eighth ahead of Stephen Jelley and Josh Cook in ninth and tenth.
