Sutton doubles up with race two victory
Laser Tools Racing's Ash Sutton took his second British Touring Car Championship race victory of the day after once again getting the better of championship leader Colin Turkington at Knockhill.
Sutton once again led every lap from pole position ahead of Team BMW's Turkington to secure his fourth victory of the season and move ever closer to Turkington's decreasing championship lead.
The Infiniti Q50 driver faced greater pressure from Turkington during the second race, but two safety car periods in quick succession ultimately hindered Turkington's charge.
Turkington crawled all over the rear of Sutton's Infiniti for most of the race, but two safety car phases crucially neutralised the race, costing the reigning four-time champion valuable time in his bid to move ahead of Sutton.
With Andy Neate's stricken Motorbase Performance Ford bringing out the second and final safety car, Sutton faced a final 10-lap shootout with Turkington directly behind.
However, the BMW runner dropped back from Sutton during the latter stages of the race and crossed the line 0.6s behind the race winning Infiniti.
Toyota Gazoo Racing UK's Tom Ingram resisted Honda's Dan Cammish to take his first podium finish of the day in third, with Cammish settling for fourth.
At one stage, both Ingram and Cammish looked factors for the race win behind the battling Sutton and Turkington, but the pair dropped back as the leading Infiniti and BMW cars began to work together.
Aiden Moffat further consolidated his strongest weekend of the year so far with fifth ahead of Team BMW's Tom Oliphant in sixth.
Moffat and Oliphant finished sixth and seventh on the road, but the pair moved up a position as virtue of Matt Neal's 10-second penalty.
Tom Chilton salvaged points for BTC Racing in seventh position, while Jake Hill, Chris Smiley and Rory Butcher completed the remainder of the top-ten in eighth, ninth and tenth.
Home hero Butcher lost vital ground when battling MB Motorsport's Hill early on for fourth. The Motorbase driver lost grip when trying to overtake Hill's Honda Civic Type-R and tumbled off into the gravel.
