With the glories of the 1980s now a distant memory, Williams and Everton both find themselves going through strange cycles of form. Despite flirtations with the top end of the order for short periods of time, neither managed to convert it into a sustained stint of success, with the bigger, better-funded outfits rising through the order.

A number of changes have been made in recent years in a bid to try and rejuvenate their fortunes. While Williams is now onto its third different driver line-up in the space of three years, Everton has cycled through a number of different managers, and is now headed up by Sam Allardyce.

There is definitely potential for both teams to move back up the pecking order. The facilities are there, there are some decent resources to be tapped into. It’s just a case of making it happen before the decline becomes too great to move back out of.
