Sainz: "Dreaming is for free"

"I am always optimistic, dreaming is for free and I try to think of myself doing well. The track suits our car in the dry and FP3 looked promising. We made a few changes to the car which helped in the wet. Happy with P3."

05:19
Verstappen: "Risks but it wasn't enough"

"It was really slippery. It is already slippery in the dry, but in the wet...

"It was fun, I like driving in the wet, but it was like driving on ice so it took a while to get the tyres to work. I struggled a lot to have any kind of grip and final lap you risk more but it was not enough to fight for first.

"But to be on the front row is good for us. The lap felt alright, it was just super difficult to get the braking zones right and be on the limit of the tyres."

05:17
Norris: "Every corner you felt like you could crash!"

"Boy, it was dreadful! I didn't know no-one else was going to get a lap after me. I felt protected a bit, but it is so slippery out there. As soon as you hit the kerb like I did, you snap one way and then the other, close to hitting the wall but it was good enough for P1 today. Not the nicest of conditions but happy it stopped raining.

"You need a good car to do it, the team did a good job. I had a little nap before qualifying and expected to be dry, but I woke up and it was raining and I thought 'oh crap!'. No-one has driven round here in the rain before, it is difficult to know what to expect.

"Every corner you felt like you could crash, so it could easily be over. One step at a time, very tough, more rewarding on a day like this."

Replays show Piastri ran deep into Turn 11 after encountering a Racing Bulls on his inside just moments after Leclerc had run off

05:12

Meanwhile, Verstappen is yet again a lingering threat right there alongside Norris going into Saturday's race, while Piastri has a bit more to consider from a less than optimal provisional fifth place

Shout out to Lawson in sixth place too, another strong performance by Racing Bulls to get both cars deep into the top ten

05:11

Impressive performance by Sainz in third after his Williams team-mate Albon was dumped out in Q1

However, the Spaniard might be in line for a grid penalty for a Q1 infraction, which will be good news for Piastri as it could move him from Row 3 to Row 2

05:10
Top 10 for the Las Vegas GP

1- Norris

2- Verstappen

3- Sainz

4- Russell

5- Piastri

6- Lawson

7- Alonso

8- Hadjar

9- Leclerc

10- Gasly

05:09

Massive final effort for Norris, despite losing a big chunk of time with that slide coming onto the final stretch.

Verstappen qualifies second, with Sainz and Russell making up row two

Piastri? Compromised by yellow flags on his final lap (for Leclerc, again), leaving him fifth

05:08
Pole for Norris

Big moment for Norris coming out of Turn 12 but it doesn't spoil his lap - he goes quickest with a 1m 47.934s

05:07

Norris is flying, almost a second clear after two sectors

Russell goes fourth

05:07
Chequered flag is out

Here we go, the drivers are on their final laps

Sainz goes quickest, for a moment before Verstappen goes quicker

05:05

Piastri narrows the gap but can't better Norris' time

McLaren 1-2, followed by Verstappen, Sainz and Lawson - 1min 30secs to go

05:04

Norris usurps Piastri by seven tenths of a second to move to the top of the timesheets with 2mins to go

05:01

With five minutes to go, Piastri leads Sainz, Norris, Lawson and Verstappen

05:01

Leclerc has yet another off-track moment on the brakes into Turn 11 from that super long straight

Piastri moves top from Norris

05:00

First cycle of laps are mostly in and it is Sainz who goes quickest early on from Hadjar, Leclerc and Lawson

04:57

Very fine margins for error for the drivers in this session on the inters

There is a dry(ish) line forming, or at least, a line less wet than others. But it means the drivers will need to stay in the confines of a slender racing line to get the best from the tyres - something they haven't been doing all that well in this session so far

04:56
Q3 is go

The fight for pole position gets underway - and yes, it is still wet but we're looking at inters now

04:55

Good effort from Pierre Gasly to make it through to Q3, maintaining his run of strong qualifying efforts at Vegas since we arrived in 2023.

Fourth in 2023, third in 2024 and top ten again in 2025

04:53

Quite stealthily, Carlos Sainz is into Q3 in the Williams, but is under investigation for an unsafe return to circuit after a spin in Q1 that impeded Lance Stroll. A penalty is likely on the way

04:52
Through to Q3

Here is the top ten that will fight it out for a potentially very open pole position battle...

1- Norris

2- Piastri

3- Verstappen

4- Russell

5- Leclerc

6- Hadjar

7- Lawson

8- Alonso

9- Gasly

10- Sainz

04:49

Big effort from Gasly long after the flag fell as he drags his Alpine back into the top ten at the final time of asking

That demotes Hulkenberg, who joins Stroll - who didn't go quicker on the Inters - a pair of Haas' and Colapinto in calling an early end to their Friday nights.

Russell was quickest again in Q2 from Hadjar

04:48
Out after Q2

11- Hulkenberg

12- Stroll

13- Ocon

14- Bearman

15- Colapinto
