Lando Norris ‘unharmed but shaken’ after mugging at Wembley
The 21-year-old Briton attended the game at Wembley Stadium and watched England agonisingly lose to Italy during a tense penalty shootout as the men’s national team missed out on the chance to end its 55-year wait for a major trophy.
A report by The Sun on Monday evening claimed that Norris was held up by robbers who stole his £40,000 watch as he attempted to get into his McLaren GT supercar following the match.
McLaren confirmed Norris was unhurt in the accident in a team statement.
“McLaren Racing can confirm that Lando Norris was involved in an incident, after the Euro 2020 final match at Wembley, during which the watch he was wearing was taken,” the statement read.
“Thankfully, Lando was unharmed but he is understandably shaken. The team is supporting Lando and we are sure that racing fans will join us in wishing him all the best for the British Grand Prix this weekend.
“As this is now a police matter we cannot comment further.”
England’s biggest game since 1966 was overshadowed by chaotic and unsavoury scenes as ticketless fans broke into Wembley Stadium ahead of kick-off.
Footage from inside Wembley showed fans fighting after crowds had stormed through the security gates.
The FA condemned the incident as “entirely unacceptable” and The Metropolitan Police said it had made 86 arrests in connection with the final, while nineteen police officers were injured.
Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were the targets of racist abuse on social media after all three England players missed penalties in the defeat to Italy.
Earlier on Monday, seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton released a message of support for the England trio as he blasted the abuse.
