Macau weekend marred by pedestrian death.

A statement by the Macau Grand Prix Organising Committee:

During the warm up for the Guia Race, competitor number 3 (Frans Verschuur) suffered apparent brake failure at Lisboa Bend.

His Renault took to the escape road at Lisboa at high speed, unable to slow. The car ran through the tire barriers, striking a parked vehicle, then continued at speed on to the traffic roundabout at the front of Hotel Lisboa, striking a truck before coming to a halt.

Two pedestrians and the driver of the truck were injured in the incident. All were taken to Conde de S. Januario Hospital, along with Frans Verschuur.

The Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee regrets to announce that a male pedestrian was pronounced dead at 09:15. The details will not be announced until the next of kin have been informed.

The other injured people suffered non-life threatening injuries in the accident and a further bulletin will be issued later on their condition.

The Renault Dealer Team Holland, entrant of car number 3, has withdrawn the team's entries from the Guia Race as a mark of respect.

The Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee offers its sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased.
