Envision Virgin Racing snaps up Nick Cassidy for 2020/21 FE season

Envision Virgin Racing has confirmed Nick Cassidy will join its team for the 2020/2021 FIA Formula E World Championship alongside Robin Frijns, marking the series debut for one of motorsport’s keenly watched rising stars.

Though he doesn’t have the largest profile in Europe having limited his track time there to a single season stint in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship – finishing fourth overall in his rookie 2016 campaign – he has since gone on to become a star of the Japanese racing scene.

Already a Super Formula and Super GT Champion at the age of 25, Cassidy will thus return to a global stage later this year when he makes his Formula E debut with Virgin Racing, replacing Sam Bird who was confirmed with Jaguar yesterday.

It won’t be his first outing behind the wheel of a Formula E car, however, having joined Virgin for the post-event ‘rookie’ test in Marrakesh, where he made his pitch by setting a faster lap time than any of the racers did before him.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for me to be joining Formula E and Envision Virgin Racing from next season,” said Cassidy. “The team is one of the most successful on the grid, have a great set-up and facilities, and have continually impressed me since I joined them for the rookie test back in March. All drivers know the depth and quality of the field in Formula E is among the best in the world, so it is great to be adding my name to this roster.”

“Racing in Japan has been an amazing experience and I’m fortunate that I’ve been able to achieve so much in a short space of time, but I feel it’s now time for the next challenge in my career and I’m very much looking forward to doing that with Envision Virgin Racing and Formula E.”

As part of the announcement Envision Virgin Racing also confirmed he will join Robin Frijns, who remans with the team for Season 7 of the all-electric series.
