"My idea is try and win and then go right to F1. If I win the GP2 championship in the first or second year, the plan is to be in F1 the following season. Only if things go really wrong will I do something else. But I don't think about that..."
The 2004 British F3 champion, will race for Hitech Piquet Sports this year, partnered by Alexandre Negrao.
His father though is aware that even if he does win the GP2 championship, a seat in F1 is by no means guaranteed.
"He is going to get to F1 if he's the right guy at the right time," warned the elder Piquet. "It's possible that if he wins the championship this year and there's no place available in F1 he would still gain experience by staying in GP2 [another season]."
