Philippaerts wins British Grand Prix

Reigning MX1 world champion David Philippaerts has taken his first victory of the 2009 season in Sunday's British Grand Prix - and jumped from second to fifth in the championship standings.

The Monster Yamaha rider won race one by 3.3sec from Honda's Clement Desalle, then secured the overall with a distant second behind KTM's Max Nagl in race two.

Nagl had finished fourth after a fall while battling Philippaerts in race one, but did enough to secure second overall by one point from Desalle, who finished third in race two.

Fellow KTM rider Jonathan Barragan completed the race one podium, but a crash and broken clutch ruled the Spaniard out of race two.

After injuring his back and wrist in a heavy fist turn tumble in Saturday's qualifying race, world championship leader Tony Cairoli salvaged 10-8 finishes for eighth overall.

The Red Bull Yamaha rider is now 34 points ahead of fellow Italian Philippaerts.

Former double 250cc world champion Mickael Pichon, replacing the injured Kevin Strijbos and Marc de Reuver at Martin Honda, was unable to repeat his qualifying race heroics - when he finished second to Philippaerts - but his 7-7 race finishes were good enough for a commendable sixth overall. Mallory Park marked Pichon's first MX1 GP since 2006.

In the MX2 class, Marvin Musquin made a perfect debut for Red Bull KTM debut - having jumped ship from NGS Honda - the Frenchman winning both motos to extend his world championship lead to 15 points over countryman Gautier Paulin.

The Kawasaki rider was third on Sunday with 3-4 finishes, with fellow Team Green rider Steven Frossard collecting second thanks to his 2-3 race results.
