2025 Austrian MotoGP: Friday Practice As It Happened

Live coverage of the FP1 and Practice sessions from the Austrian MotoGP at the Red Bull Ring.

The Austrian MotoGP marks the 13th stop of the 2025 grand prix season, and the first race after the summer break.

This afternoon's Practice is scheduled for 15:00 local time.

Marc Marquez was fastest in FP1 and enters the weekend with a 120-point lead over Alex Marquez, who has a long lap penalty to serve this weekend after his crash with Joan Mir in Brno.

Ducati Lenovo's championship leader has never won in Austria, but the Bologna brand has taken all but two grand prix victories at the Spielberg venue, which has been on the calendar since 2016 in its current Red Bull-backed guise.

Three of those wins have been taken by Francesco Bagnaia, the last three in succession, in fact. The Italian is without a win this year since the US race in April, though.

The Austrian race, of course, is a home round for KTM, and Maverick Vinales returns to action this weekend. Both Enea Bastianini and Pedro Acosta were able to be on the podium last time out in Czechia.

Franco Morbidelli also returns having been out since his Sachsenring Sprint crash.

Red flag

Now Miguel Oliveira has crashed at turn six. He's also walking away, but is under investigation immediately for crashing under yellow flags.

Red flag is out after the Portuguese rider's crash, but not for Oliveira's crash, rather for the punctured air fence as a result of Quartararo's. 26:54 on the clock.

Quartararo crash

Fabio Quartararo has crashed at turn six. He's up and walking away, albeit with a bit of a limp. The bike picked itself up after he fell from it and took itself through the gravel to the barrier.

14:31

Improvement from Bezzecchi - up to ninth.

14:30

Soft rear tyre for Pedro Acosta and he goes fastest on the lap after that run-on. 0.032s ahead of Bagnaia.

Quartararo also with a fresh soft rear and he goes fifth with his latest lap.

14:29

Acosta the latest rider to run-on at turn four. Like Fernandez earlier and Bezzecchi this morning, no harm done beyond a lap lost.

14:28

Difference in front tyres between the two factory Ducati riders at the moment, and Marquez a little faster - 1:29.3 for Marquez, 1:29.6 for Bagnaia on their last respective laps with more or less equal rear tyre age of 11 laps.

14:26

Struggle for Bezzecchi in this session. Third this morning, but he's down in 17th now despite being now on a fresh soft rear tyre.

14:25

Hard-compound front tyre for Bagnaia on this second run. Fresh medium front for Marquez.

A few other riders on hard front: Alex Marquez, Acosta, Di Giannantonio, Martin, Bezzecchi.

14:23

Marc Marquez heading back out now as well.

14:22

38 minutes on the clock now and Bagnaia is back out for his second run.

14:19

Marini continuing on his first run still, lapping in mid-1:29s which is fairly encouraging.

14:15

A lot of riders now back in the pits after 15 minutes. PB from Mir puts him 14th. Only him, Quartararo, Alex Marquez, Morbidelli, Ogura, and Martin on-track at the moment.

14:13

Run-on for Bagnaia at turn six, heads off down the escape road. He's still fastest at the moment from Marini, and Marc Marquez recently moved up to third.

Martin now back out on track with his second bike.

14:11

New Honda fairing on Marini's bike, he ran it this morning as well. Marginally different in the front wings to the standard 2025 aero. Joan Mir rode with it this morning and it looks like Johann Zarco has it this afternoon as well.

14:09

Fabio Quartararo briefly fastest on the Yamaha but he's been beaten by Luca Marini and now Bagnaia who is up to the top on a 1:29.161, 0.044s ahead of Marini.

14:08

Run-on for Raul Fernandez at turn four. He stays on but loses a lap to that error - the same one as Marco Bezzecchi made this morning, more or less.

14:07

Francesco Bagnaia fastest at the moment on a 1:29.475 from Fabio Quartararo just a couple of hundredths behind.

14:06

Noted this morning that Pedro Acosta was running a new KTM fairing.

Bastianini also ran it this morning and is continuing with it this afternoon. Binder also now running the updated bodywork.

Vinales was on the old fairing this morning but have not yet seen him this afternoon. He, of course, is returning from injury this weekend after missing Germany and Czechia.

Marc Marquez tops FP1

Flag is out in Austria for FP1 and it's Marc Marquez who ends fastest with that 0.310s advantage over Bagnaia. Bezzecchi completes the top-three ahead of Alex Marquez and Franco Morbidelli who round out the top-five.

10:28

Would've been another improvement on the seocnd lap of his last run from Martin but Marquez went deep at turn nine and Martin had to back off a little to give Marquez space.

Martin, worth noting, the only one out there for this final run on a fresh soft rear tyre. Everyone else on used medium rears, apart from Bezzecchi who has a fresh medium.
