2025 Malaysian MotoGP, Sepang: Friday Practice + reaction as it happened

Live updates from Friday practice at the 2025 Malaysian MotoGP at Sepang.

MotoGP arrives at Sepang in Malaysia fresh from an Aprilia double at Phillip Island - courtesy of Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez - but with Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin and Maverick Vinales still sidelined by injury.

Marc Marquez is again being replaced by Ducati test rider Michele Pirro, Martin by Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori and Vinales by KTM test rider Pol Espargaro.

Alex Marquez is comfortably on course to wrap up a historic Marquez one-two in the world championship this weekend, holding a 97-point advantage over next-best Bezzecchi. Just 74 points will remain after this weekend.

The Gresini rider is a former Sprint winner at Sepang and topped February’s official pre-season test.

Last year’s Sepang pole and grand prix winner Francesco Bagnaia has faded to fourth overall on his factory Ducati after back-to-back misery at Mandalika and Phillip Island.

Martin won last year’s Sprint and was runner-up to Bagnaia in the grand prix, after a thrilling early duel between the then title rivals.

Meanwhile, Augusto Fernandez is back this weekend to give the new Yamaha V4 its second wild-card appearance of the year, after a 14th place at Misano in mid-September.

09:21

There is 15 minutes left and the rain may just have decided the Q2 order.

That's a disaster for Alex Marquez, who is 14th at the moment.

09:20

Acosta moves up to sixth.

09:20

There is more rain out there!

09:19

Joan Mir now goes fourth on the Honda.

09:19

Though that was instantly beaten by Marco Bezzecchi, who is now fifth.

09:19

Pol Espargaro jumps up to fifth on the Tech3 KTM.

09:17

Australia winner Raul Fernandez goes up to fifth on his Trackhouse Aprilia.

09:16
Crash - Alex Marquez

Alex Marquez has gone down at Turn 2 just as he started a time attack lap. That's a disaster for the Gresini Ducati rider.

09:16

Fabio Quartararo now goes fastest on the Yamaha with a 1m58.113s.

09:14

Johann Zarco goes top with a 1m58.129s on a fresh soft rear. Great lap from the LCR Honda rider!

09:12

Ducati is being called back in, presumably to get some soft tyres onto his bike for a time attack.

09:11

As it stands, with just under 24 minutes to go, the top 10 is:

  1. Aldeguer
  2. Mir
  3. Bagnaia
  4. Di Giannantonio
  5. Rins
  6. Marini
  7. Marquez
  8. Bezzzecchi
  9. Ogura
  10. Quartararo
09:11

Rins moves up to fifth, which could be very crucial if the rain comes down harder.

09:10
Rain flags

The rain flags are being waved.

09:09

Ogura moves up to eighth now.

09:07
09:06

Ai Ogura makes a leap to 10th on a new soft rear tyre. There is a bit more wind in the air and it has just gotten darker, so teams will need to be wary of possible rain.

09:02

Acosta improves on his KTM, but stays 11th.

09:02

Bit of a shake applying the gas for Bagnaia exiting Turn 15 a moment ago. That's a little bit concerning.

08:58
08:57

Acosta puts a lap on the board and goes up to 11th. Top KTM at the moment is Pol Espargaro in 10th.

08:54

Pecco Bagnaia's body language looks a lot less agitated than it was last week at Phillip Island. He heads out again for another run.

08:53

Acosta is back on track after his early crash. That fall won't do much to cool him off much, given how frustrated he's been of late on that KTM.

08:53

Big stoppie for Joan Mir on the brakes into Turn 1on that factory Honda!

Despite that, the afternoon has started off well for the 2020 world champion, who is second currently.

Honda should be strong today as Aleix Espargaro has done a fair bit of recent testing at Sepang.
