2025 Portuguese MotoGP: Sprint race AS IT HAPPENED

Live coverage of Sprint at the 2025 Portuguese MotoGP, the penultimate round of the season.

The Sprint race at the 2025 Portuguese MotoGP is due to start at 15:00 local time.

Marco Bezzecchi starts on pole position after an impressive Q2 session that saw him lap three times in the 1:37s in his second run.

Alex Marquez entered qualifying as perhaps the favourite to take pole after his impressive Friday form, but he'll start from fifth after a crash at turn three late on in Q2.

Pedro Acosta qualified on the front row for the first time this season and Portimao is the circuit that saw him take his first premier class podium in 2024.

Fabio Quartararo completes the front row on the Yamaha, although over race distance he is likely to struggle more.

The Sprint will mark the first MotoGP race for Nicolo Bulega, who is replacing Marc Marquez this weekend. The 2025 WorldSBK runner-up will start 18th.

Raul Fernandez will not start the Sprint after withdrawing from the weekend following FP2.

Marquez wins Portimao Sprint

Acosta got right back to the rear tyre of Marquez on the final lap, but couldn't make a pass.

Marquez wins, Acosta forced to settle for second, Bezzecchi takes third having been largely unable to make an impact after he lost the lead.

Quartararo a sneaky-good fourth, then Di Giannantonio and Aldeguer, who passed both Zarco and Bagnaia on the final lap.

Bagnaia ends up eighth having lost out to Zarco as well at the end. Binder and Espargaro complete the top-10.

15:21
Lap 11/12

Marquez lost a lot over the line there, under half-a-second now. Bezzecchi still there on the last lap too.

15:18
Lap 9/12

Acosta was sticking with Marquez for most of that lap 9, but Marquez so much better in the final split. 0.3s for Marquez with 3 to go.

Marquez makes the move again at turn one, and this time Acosta can't respond at turn five.

15:15

Marquez back to the front at turn one on lap eight, but Acosta responds again at turn five. It's an excellent battle.

15:14
Lap 7/12

Marquez seems much faster, but finding a way through Acosta continues to be a tough task. He's still right there and Bezzecchi is kind of beginning to drop away.

15:12

Acosta tried to retaliate at turn three but ran wide. At turn five, though, he makes it stick and reclaims the lead.

15:11
Lap 5/12

Marquez with much better drive over the crest out of the last corner this time and he leads onto lap 6.

15:10

Bezzecchi in a bit deep at turn one but he didn't lose too much, still in the lead group.

15:09
Lap 4/12

Acosta continues to lead, but this feels like it has Alex Marquez written all over it. He's looking very strong on the 2024 Ducati.

Bulega has crashed at turn 13 - front lock straight up and down.

15:08
Lap 3/12

Acosta not escaping from Bezzecchi, but the Italian also has Marquez for company.

In fact, Marquez makes his move for second at turn one and makes it stick with 10 to go.

15:07

Chantra has retired to the pits.

15:07
Acosta leads

A bit of wheelie over the crest out of the last corner for Acosta but it doesn't stop him blasting by Bezzecchi on the run to turn one.
