Marquez sets Mugello record in FP3, Vinales misses out
After a surprise opening day sweep by Suzuki's Andrea Iannone, Marc Marquez delivered the pace threatened ever since private testing at Mugello in the form of a new lap record in FP3 for the Italian MotoGP.
Marquez posted a 1m 46.439s during his final run, using a new medium rear and soft front tyres on his Repsol Honda.
That put the Spaniard 0.336s ahead of Yamaha's home hero Valentino Rossi, riding with a special helmet design, although Iannone kept second overall despite failing to improve this morning.

Also failing to improve from Friday was Rossi's team-mate Maverick Vinales, who plummeted from second to eleventh on the combined timesheets and will thus take part in Qualifying 1.
The likes of Jack Miller (who fell) and Dani Pedrosa will join Vinales in fighting for the final two transfer places to Qualifying 2.
By contrast, those already confirmed for the pole position shootout alongside Marquez, Iannone and Rossi are Jorge Lorenzo (Ducati), Johann Zarco (Tech3 Yamaha), Danilo Petrucci (Pramac Ducati), Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda), Franco Morbidelli (Marc VDS Honda), Alex Rins (Suzuki) and Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati).
Free Practice 4 will take place just before this afternoon's pair of qualifying sessions.
