"Marc Marquez would win on any other motorcycle" - Giacomo Agostini
Grand Prix legend Giacomo Agostini says Marc Marquez shouldn’t need to change teams to prove he is ‘the best’ because he would win on any other motorcycle.
With six MotoGP World Championships to his name, Marquez is well on the way towards surpassing Agostini’s record total of eight premier class titles and stands to achieve them all with Repsol Honda.
Marquez recently penned a new four-year Honda deal that will keep him with HRC until the end of the 2024, with many speculating that it will be his moment to consider changing teams in an attempt to assure his legacy by winning titles with two different manufacturers.
Though Marquez has remained coy on the prospect of ever leaving the Honda fold, he was recently quoted as saying ‘I am 27-years-old, I have a contract for another four years, you never know’ when asked whether he’d consider changing teams.
However, in an interview with GPone, Agostini dismissed the notion that Marquez needs to win a title on a different bike to prove himself as the greatest grand prix rider of all time, not least because he believes he’d have no problem achieving the feat anyway.
“I don't think Marc has the need, as some say, to change his bike, to move to another brand, to prove his worth, which is tremendous and that he shows on the track. We all know that he is the best and we all know that he would win with any other motorcycle.
"No one can say, although I have heard him comment on more than one occasion, that Marc wins because he has the Honda. No, not to mention, it is not Honda who wins, it is Marc who makes the Honda win. And, I insist, in that sense we all know that he could win with many other bikes."
