Jorge Martin takes pole position for the 2022 Americas MotoGP in Austin, Texas as Ducati riders dominate qualifying at COTA.

After fighting through Q1, Martin pinched pole from factory riders Jack Miller and Francesco Bagnaia on his final lap, with Pramac team-mate Johann Zarco and Gresini's Enea Bastianini completing an all-Desmosedici top five.

Reigning world champion Fabio Quartararo lowsided from his Yamaha just before the halfway stage of the 15-minutes, sending the Frenchman sprinting to get a lift back to the pits.

Quartararo made it back out for the last five minutes and was best of the rest after the Ducatis.

After joining Martin in fighting through Q1, Alex Rins had to settle for a subdued seventh, just ahead of Suzuki team-mate Joan Mir.

Marc Marquez, who will be seeking his eighth COTA victory on Sunday, could only manage ninth. The Repsol Honda rider had predicted the Ducati's would be hard to beat in qualfiying but was second quickest to Bagnaia on race pace in the earlier FP4 session.

After a fall in Q1, world championship leader Aleix Espargaro will start from 13th on the grid, just ahead of Aprilia team-mate Maverick Vinales.

Marc Marquez is returning to action after missing the Mandalika race and following Argentine weekend due to a new episode of double vision caused by his huge warm-up accident in Indonesia.

COTA is one of his most successful circuits, having won seven of the eight MotoGP races held at the Texan track, falling while leading in 2019, when Suzuki's Alex Rins took victory.

Subsurface soil movement means large bumps have been a persistent issue at COTA, resulting in the latest partial resurfacing for the 2022 event, covering Turns 2-10 and 12-16.
