Waltrip had pushed his way to the front by the seventh lap. For 32 laps he battled with Pontiac driver, Tony Stewart, for the lead. Then, on lap 39 Waltrip found Stewart's challenge had evaporated. Stewart had lost the draft and found himself traveling backwards through the field.
Eventually Stewart was to battle his way back up to that second spot, but wasn't to seriously challenge Waltrip again. Waltrip, led for the rest of the race and his win places him forth place on the grid for Sunday's Daytona 500. The rest of the top six was made up with Jerry Nadeau, Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte and Robby Gordon.
Incidents included Mike Skinner suffering an ignition box problem early on in the race. Though the problem was soon righted, it had caused Dodge driver Buckshot Jones to hit the brakes to avoid hitting Skinner's slowing Chevy. Jones was then slammed into by the Chevrolet of Kenny Wallace, the incident finishing Jones' race with only 9 laps completed.
Skinner was sent into a spin by the incident. This and his pitting too early and having to start the restart from the back of the lead lap, all contributed to him finishing in tenth place. Jones was not so lucky and was only credited with completing 9 of the 50 laps. The incident had involved eight cars including retiree Shawna Robinson who went out on lap 14.
Also penalized for early pitting was Jimmy Spencer in the Target Dodge. His subsequent battle was to prove worthless as he fell victim of a tyre blowout on lap 28. Seventh place saw Dave Marcis, which means he will race a record 35th Daytona 500. Also into the race, qualifying by virtue of their times are Shawna Robinson, Geoffrey Bodine and Kyle Petty.
