Qualifying times: Subway 500.

Ryan Newman's chances of taking this year's Nextel Cup may now be slim but the driver of the #12 ALLTEL Dodge is not giving up, setting pole position for this Sunday's Subway 500 with a record 97.043mph lap around the retarmaced and faster Martinsville Speedway.

Rusty Wallace will start the #2 Miller Lite Dodge second, while best of the three title favourites is Dale Earnhardt Jr, lining up the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet third. Points leader Kurt Busch starts seventh in the #97 Sharpie/Irwin Ford, while his closest rival, five times Martinsville winner Jeff Gordon, could only manage 15th in the #24 Dupont Chevrolet.
