Rea initially went fastest and looked set to keep that position based on his impressive mid 1m 36s time, however, Toprak Razgatlioglu produced a stunning final sector to go top after trailing by three tenths earlier in the lap.
The two championship leaders were then bettered by Superpole specialist Tom Sykes who went quicker by a tenth of a second.
Alex Lowes was first out of the pits for the second and final runs and went onto provisional pole with what was a new lap record at the time.
But, Razgatlioglu regained provisional pole on his penultimate lap. Sykes came close to matching the Turkish rider’s time, but was unable to do so in the final sector.
However, 2021 pole hound Jonathan Rea did have an answer for the Yamaha man on his final lap.
Rea managed to not only keep the advantage he had through the first three sectors, but instead gain time on Razgatlioglu in the final sector - an area of the track where Razgatlioglu had consistently been quicker than the Kawasaki rider so far this weekend.
Home favourite Lucas Mahias suffered a fast crash at turn one during the closing stages, but managed to retain a top ten starting spot.
