The Christophe Guyot-run GMT94 Yamaha squad will make its full-time return to the World Supersport grid from this month’s Portuguese round before a full 2019 campaign.
The GMT94 squad were regular World Superbike and World Supersport contenders between 2005 and 2009 before switching to the Endurance World Championship where the team has enjoyed sustained success.
Guyot says the return to World Supersport poses a fresh challenge for the whole team having intermittently come back this year with former 125cc world champion Mike di Meglio at Phillip Island before contesting the Aragon, Donington Park and Misano rounds with Corentin Perolari.
“Top-level racing needs teams to take charge of the training and future of young racers wanting to access the highest level,” Guyot said. “This will be the purpose of our commitment, which will continue to combine experience and youth.
“After three world-champion and five runner-up titles, we are starting from scratch in a different and challenging discipline. Together, we will take the time to build a team that will aim to win in world championship-level sprint racing.”
GMT94 Yamaha will contest the final four rounds of the current World Supersport championship, starting at Portimao on September 14-16, before making a full comeback in 2019.
