Flawless Locatelli does the double in Jerez masterclass
2020 WorldSSP Jerez – Race Results (2)
Andrea Locatelli became the first ever rider to score a pair of WorldSSP victories on the same weekend as he maintained his dominant start to the 2020 season.
The Italian was once more in imperious form on the BARDAHL Evans Bros Yamaha to assume the lead from the first corner before managing his advantage until the chequered flag in what would be a shortened race of 11 laps.
Having run him close initially in race one, Jules Cluzel had no answer to his rival in race two, instead spending the majority of the encounter fending off attentions from the two Puccetti Kawasakis of Philipp Oettl and Lucas Mahias.
Eventually, former champion Mahias worked his way past his team-mate to begin putting pressure on his fellow Frenchman, but Cluzel would hold on for his third consecutive second place result, one that keeps the margin to Locatelli pegged at 15 points.
Behind Mahias, Oettl held out for fourth position, with Raffaele de Rosa completing a remarkable fifth place finish after being embroiled in a bizarre incident on the warm-up lap when he was struck by Axel Bassani on the run up to turn one.
Replays showed Bassani seemingly distracted when looking over his shoulder, only to look forward again and ride straight into the MV Agusta ahead. Despite the unusual circumstances, Bassani escaped unharmed but took no further part in the race.
Jn sixth position, Corentin Perolari claimed seventh from Yamaha counterpart Isaac Vinales, Steven Odendaal, Hannes Soomer and Manuel Gonzalez completed the top ten.
