Sutton reignites title challenge with Rockingham win

Reigning British Touring Car champion Ashley Sutton has reignited his title challenge after bolting clear for his fourth win of the 2018 season in race two at Rockingham.

The Subaru driver started the race from second on the grid, but immediately powered his RWD Levorg into the lead at the start of the race, ahead of race one winner Adam Morgan.

Before Sutton could properly get the hammer down, the BMR driver had to contend with two safety car periods after incidents involving Aiden Moffat, Michael Caine and Brett Smith meant the race didn't truly get underway until the eighth lap of the race.

Once the final safety car came in on lap eight, Sutton, like Morgan managed in the previous race, was able to pull away at will as the conditions continued to improve following a greasy start to the race.

Sutton eventually crossed the line 4.4s ahead of Morgan in second, to leap up into third in the drivers' standings, just 17-points off Tom Ingram's championship lead.

While Sutton took the honours at the head of the field, it was Ingram who arguably stole the show after the Speedworks Motorsport driver produced another remarkable recovery drive from 27th to a scarcely believable third.

As such, Ingram has regained the points lead ahead of Team BMW's Colin Turkington, who finished the second race with a solid top-five result behind the fourth placed Vauxhall Astra of Senna Proctor.

BTC Norlin Racing's Chris Smiley backed up his fourth place finish from race one with another strong result in sixth, ahead of Mike Bushell in seventh.

Rory Butcher, Matt Simpson and Tom Chilton completed the remainder of the top-ten finishers.
