Old footage emerges of Piquet’s cruel joke about Senna
Piquet made a racist remark about Lewis Hamilton in the days building up to Sunday’s F1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, before more footage from the same interview from November 2021 showed him repeating the offensive term and adding a homophobic word.
Piquet had apologised, claiming the word was not intended to be racist, and Hamilton had questioned why “older voices” are still given a platform.
Further footage has now leaked of Piquet mocking the legendary Senna.
Piquet can be seen saying: “Another journalist asked me ‘be honest, who’s the best? You or Senna?’
“I said ‘I’m alive’.”
The interviewer responded to Piquet, saying: “That is harsh.”
Senna, one of the greatest F1 drivers ever, passed away after crashing at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix.
Senna is Hamilton’s hero. The late driver’s family gave one of his iconic helmets to Hamilton as a gift in 2017.
Hamilton is now an honorary citizen of Brazil - where Piquet and Senna are from.
Piquet was a two-time F1 champion when Senna’s career started. When Senna won his first title, he was labelled “a Sao Paulo taxi driver” by Piquet, according to the BBC.
They each have three F1 championships.
