F1 VIDEO: Lewis Hamilton equals Michael Schumacher's wins record
Lewis Hamilton has equalled Michael Schumacher’s Formula 1 win record following his victory at the Eifel Grand Prix.
Hamilton’s seventh victory of the season has moved him level with the seven-time champion on 91 race victories, at a venue the German won at five times throughout his career.
Schumacher has held the record for most victories since 2001, where he surpassed Alain Prost for 51 wins.
Hamilton overtook Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas and went on to take his seventh win from the opening 11 races of the 2020 season, as Bottas ultimately retired with engine trouble to suffer a blow to his hopes of winning the title.
When Schumacher retired in 2006, it looked like the record would remain unsurmountable.
Hamilton left McLaren at the end of the 2012 season, replacing Schumacher with just 22 wins to his name - 69 behind the German.
Since being at Mercedes, Hamilton has won 70 times in 149 races - winning five titles in seven seasons, with the Briton looking likely to make it a sixth in 2020 to move level on seven with Schumacher.
Hamilton has pulled 69 points clear of Bottas in the 2020 championship standings after his victory at the Nurburgring.
With Hamilton and Schumacher sitting on 91 apiece, Sebastian Vettel sits in third place on 53 wins.
Hamilton now has the opportunity to take the record outright as F1 returns to Portimao for the Portuguese Grand Prix in two weeks' time.
