Iannone tops Dovizioso, Marquez falls in warm-up

Fresh from securing his best qualifying place since June, Andrea Iannone topped MotoGP morning warm-up at Aragon, ahead of countryman and ex-team-mate Andrea Dovizioso despite a high-speed fall.

Iannone was one of three crashers as the cooler morning temperatures also caught out championship leader Marc Marquez (turn one) and Aleix Espargaro (turn twelve). The Suzuki man fell victim to the tricky nature of the right-hand turn two.

Before then, he was fast. Iannone’s 1m 47.888s was a full 0.64s quicker than Dovizioso’s Ducati. Not that it will matter to the leading Ducati, as Dovizioso posted an impressive ten-lap run that was as notable for its consistency as it was for its speed.

Marquez was third fastest, his quickest time 0.081s off Dovizioso’s best, and Cal Crutchlow, like qualifying, was fourth. Valentino Rossi appears to have made an overnight recovery after the joint-worst qualifying performance of his 23-year career in grand prix. The 39-year old was fifth.

Alvaro Bautista (sixth) then headed a trio of satellite Ducatis with Danilo Petrucci (seventh) and Jack Miller (eighth) just behind. Dani Pedrosa, using HRC’s carbon swingarm, was ninth, a place ahead of Maverick Viñales (tenth). Pole sitter Jorge Lorenzo was eleventh.
