McLaren names Tanner Foust as first driver for Extreme E team
In June, McLaren announced it will contest the all-electric SUV championship for its sophomore season next year.
Extreme E started its inaugural campaign this year, with teams and drivers competing in locations around the world in a bid to raise awareness of climate change and environmental issues.
McLaren is the first F1 outfit to enter the series with champions Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg already having teams of their own.
The Woking-based team already announced earlier in the week that it has acquired a 75 per cent stake in the Arrow McLaren SP IndyCar team, confirming its full commitment to IndyCar long-term.
Foust will spearhead the team’s challenge in 2022 alongside an unnamed female driver, who will be announced at a later date.
Speaking of the announcement, CEO Zak Brown said: “We are thrilled that Tanner has joined the McLaren Racing family of drivers. He is a top-class off-road competitor with a wealth of experience and a winning track record. Alongside his driving prowess he’s a fantastic personality, who will connect with new fans around the world and bring the purpose and important message to Extreme E to the fore.
“We’re looking forward to announcing Tanner’s teammate and our first female McLaren driver, to complete our line-up.”
Foust has won four X Games gold medals alongside two Formula Drift championships.
He was the first American to win a round of the European Rallycross Championship and finished in the top three in 2011 and 2012.
Additionally, he’s hosted Top Gear in America and has held various world records with Hot Wheels.
He added: “To be able to race for McLaren is every driver’s dream and the opportunity to compete for the team in this innovative and imaginative racing series makes it even more special. The concept is unique and the challenge is compelling. It will enable me to draw on all my experience and skills, while being part of a positive cause addressing key issues for our planet and society.”
