Could Danilo Petrucci be heading to WorldSBK in 2022?
Two-time MotoGP race winner Danilo Petrucci could be the latest Grand Prix rider to move to WorldSBK for next season.
Petrucci’s only viable option of remaining in MotoGP would be with his current Tech 3 KTM team which looks slim at best. Raul Fernandez is expected to take up that second seat next year alongside the already confirmed Remy Gardner.
When asked about what his next move would be, Petrucci left the door open regarding a move to WorldSBK, but also stated off-road racing as an option due to the Dakar race rumoured to be of interest.
"We haven't had any talks with KTM, we need to wait until after these two GPs. Many rumours, we've had no talks," added Petrucci.
"I think that I will not be the rider for KTM in MotoGP next year. For sure, first, I want to talk with them and then decide what is their idea.
"If not, I have to look at other rides in WorldSBK or maybe switch to off-road categories."
If the likeable Italian does indeed make the move to World Superbike, Ducati or Honda figure to be his most likely destination.
Both manufacturers can offer a factory seat with the potential of podiums and wins - certainly true in Ducati’ case.
Both Ducati and Honda are yet to confirm any rider signings for 2022, suggesting Petrucci could have a good cance at claiming one of those four seats.
Moving to WorldSBK would see Petrucci become the sixth MotoGP rider to join the series after Scott Redding, Alvaro Bautista, Tito Rabat, Jonas Folger and Eugene Laverty.
