With track conditions drying after a wet warm up session, a split of tyre choice saw the Kawasaki’s of Rea and Alex Lowes, GoEleven Ducati rider Chaz Davies, and the two Yamaha’s of Garrett Gerloff and Toprak Razgatlioglu all begin the race with an intermediate front, while front row starters Scott Redding and Tom Sykes chose a wet front - a decision they instantly regretted as both riders had no pace at all and dropped down the field.
Michael Van Der Mark made the best start of anyone as he came from 15th to fifth within four laps. The Dutchman’s gamble to start on slick tyres - the only rider to do so, paid off as he maintained fifth position to the flag.
Lucas Mahias was the only rider to crash which occured on lap one, while Sykes eventually pitted following the decision to use the wet tyre.
Lowes and Gerloff took second and third spot ahead of Davies and Van Der Mark. The top nine riders will all line-up in the positions they finished in for race two.
Lowes was fastest leading into the Superpole race in a wet WorldSBK warm up session at MotorLand Aragon ahead of Scott Redding and Jonathan Rea.
Jonathan Rea claimed his 100th WorldSBK win during Saturday’s race one of 2021 at MotorLand Aragon.
Rea dominated the 18 lap race by leading from start to finish, while a brilliant battle for second saw Alex Lowes pip Toprak Razgatlioglu over the line for second.
As was the case in race one, Razgatlioglu had to start the Superpole race from tenth and not sixth, due to exceeding track limits.
