Morgan 'over the moon' with Thruxton victory

Mac Tools Racing's Adam Morgan has admitted his delight in securing the British Touring Car Championship lead after winning the final race of the weekend at Thruxton.

The Mercedes A-Class driver won the reverse grid race after superbly fending off Jack Goff and Senna Proctor to snatch the championship lead away from Vauxhall's Josh Cook by a single point.

Despite falling to a 14th place finish after qualifying in 12th for race one, Morgan gradually rose back up the order to finish seventh in race two, which ultimately handed the Ciceley Motorsport driver pole position for the final reverse grid encounter.

"We came here carrying 66 kilos so qualifying and race one was always going to be difficult. Race one we were quick, but I just completely messed the start up and we lost four or five places there," Morgan told Crash.net.

"We underestimated the track temperature in race two and the tyre pressures came in really high. So we made adjustments from that in race and the car was really on the sweet spot.

"I was able to just get my foot down and just go. I’m over the moon and chuffed to bits."

Although Morgan led every single lap of the final race, the new BTCC points leader admitted he was pushed hard by the Vauxhall of Proctor for the majority of the race.

Proctor later dropped to third behind the hard charging Eurotech Honda of Jack Goff.

Such was the pace of Goff, Morgan said he felt a brief moment of panic as the Honda Civic Type-R appeared in his mirrors.

"Senna [Proctor] pushed me bloody hard all the way through so I really worked my tyres quite hard. I managed to get a gap for a little bit and I saw Jack [Goff] coming up like a steam train," Morgan continued.

"I had a bit of a panic trying to work out how many laps I had left. But I realised he had to get past Senna and there wasn’t enough time to catch me so I could savour the last lap and bring it home in the top spot.

"I’m just over the moon. We go into Oulton Park with the championship lead. It’s a track that hasn’t been very nice to us in the past and we’ve got maximum ballast so it’s going to be difficult but we’ll be alright."
