Morgan takes first BTCC win since 2018

Mercedes driver Adam Morgan has taken his first British Touring Car Championship race victory since Rockingham 2018 after resisting Colin Turkington during a red-flag shortened third race at Oulton Park.

The Ciciely Motorsport driver ended his two-year victory draught after successfully soaking up a torrent of pressure from defending champion Turkington, who spent the latter part of the race glued to the rear of Morgan's Mercedes A-Class.

Morgan started the race from second but led every corner of the reverse grid encounter after immediately moving into the lead at the start, at the expense of pole-sitter Bobby Thompson, who dropped from pole to 11th by the end of the opening lap.

The Carlube Racing driver spent the opening half of the race defending his position ahead of Tom Oliphant, who jumped from sixth to second. However, with Turkington setting a series of fastest laps to close in on the leading pair, Oliphant played the team game to let his BMW stable mate through in a bid to attack Morgan for the lead.

Although Morgan continued to absorb the pressure applied by Turkington, the Mercedes driver's days at the head of the field looked numbered as the reigning four-time champion gradually upped the ante.

But Turkington's bid for the win came to an abrupt end on lap 11 when a heavy shunt involving Nicolas Hamilton and Stephen Jelley brought out the red flag, meaning Morgan was declared the winner ahead of Turkington and Oliphant.

Ash Sutton was also firmly in the frame to make a play for the race lead, but had to settle for fourth ahead of BTC Racing's Tom Chilton in fifth.

Senna Proctor ended his day in strong fashion to score a sixth place finish for the Excelr8 Hyundai squad. Jake Hill was seventh for the second consecutive race, while Rory Butcher, Chris Smiley and Aiden Moffat completed the remainder of the top-ten in eighth, ninth and tenth.
